A Town Garden

THE GARDEN THEN:

The 'before' photo shows a typical long, narrow London garden that's desperately in need of a plan. A brick paved terrace at the end of the garden provides a nice seating area but the rest of the garden has little direction and just isn't very inviting.

THE BRIEF:

was for a modern outdoor space to reflect the stunning contemporary design of the house interior. The clients wanted plants with interesting shapes and lots of colour; there were some existing mature plants and a nice slab of yew hedge to be integrated into the new design. The owners also had some lovely pieces of sculpture that they wanted to use in the garden.

"The garden has secluded areas that aren't overlooked by neighbours, a precious commodity in a busy city"

The design divides the garden into four sections; a path leads through the area near the house past lush planting and down into a sunken area. This is a sheltered place to sit next to a long narrow pool, surrounded by even more abundant planting that can be viewed at eye-level. The third area is a passage screened with strong planting shapes leading through to a hidden area at the end of the garden. This final area has been enhanced by plants with strong architectural shapes, it's a relaxing place to entertain friends.

THE GARDEN NOW:

The design of this compact London garden creates different spaces, each flowing seamlessly into the next,. There are three distinct seating areas, a narrow pool of water and lush planting that provides shape, form, texture and colour.
