 Small and Smart
A Courtyard Garden in Battersea, South London
THE GARDEN THEN:
Overlooked on three sides by tall buildings, this small garden was
devoid of plants and rarely used.
THE BRIEF:
from the client was to create an attractive garden with low maintenance plants. He wanted some screening from the surrounding buildings so that he could relax outside and enjoy barbeques with friends.
“A mirror on the wall reflects light into the area and gives the illusion of a bit more space”
 THE DESIGN:
includes a timber pergola covered in scented climbing plants, screening the seating area below. A mirror on the wall reflects light into the area and gives the illusion of a bit more space. Raised planting borders, painted to match the kitchen interior making the link between house and garden, were filled with seasonal plants, flowers and bulbs.
THE GARDEN NOW:
there’s a sheltered seating area providing somewhere to unwind after a busy day. When you live in a city, just a small number of plants and a little privacy is balm for the soul.
